The customer on an Eastern Suburbs property spotted internal decay at the base of a tall eucalyptus sandwiched between two houses. On inspection the trunk was substantially hollow for the bottom metre — a classic case of externally healthy-looking canopy over compromised wood. Felling was off the table: the drop zone between the two buildings was less than the canopy radius.
The climber set a dual-line system from an anchor above the canopy and worked the tree down in short sections, each one rigged to a ground-tied lowering line. Every piece landed on the narrow side passage under control. Post-removal, the cross-section confirmed the owner’s instinct: approximately 60% internal decay, with termite damage through the heartwood.
Hollow trees like this are genuinely dangerous — a healthy crown masks a structural failure waiting for the next wind event. If you suspect internal decay (hollow-sound knock, fruiting bodies at the base, soil heaving on one side), book a qualified inspection before the tree decides for you.
